What is a HTML website?

HTML stands for : HyperText Markup Language.

HTML is the code behind your website which internet browsers read and then translate into the pretty website you are seeing :) This code can dictate specific rules and functions for the website, such as font styles and the action behind the forms you submit etc. HTML is limited by itself but can work with other codes such as JavaScript and CSS to give your website more functions.

Most website design companies refer to HTML websites as "static sites" meaning the website stays exactly the way it is unless the webmaster goes into the coding to make changes, i.e. the user has no access to editing the website themselves and the website has no integration features e.g. forums. This isn't exactly true as some interactive functions can be created in HTML, although it is quite out dated, limited and more time consuming than the newer CMS.

What is a CMS website?

CMS stands for : Content Management System.

There are many different types of CMS, we will cover the most common form of CMS website.

In the CMS website the design of the website and the websites' content are separated. The design is one page and on that page an area [or several] is selected to display the websites' content through it, e.g. if you select the "about us" page the design remains the same, only the pages content changes. This allows for easy design changes.

CMS websites have a central data base and control panel, in this area users can be created with different levels of access. The website owner would normally have access to add images, products, edit page content, write articles etc which are then displayed on the website. The webmaster would use this control area to add and create features for the website.

What is the difference between HTML and CMS websites?

Although CMS also uses HTML within it, a purely HTML website is severely limited in comparison. A CMS website has a backend site with user access for adding and editing content easily while using your normal internet browser. A standard purely HTML website is static with only FTP access for webmasters. On average CMS websites cost a little more to setup, but are cheaper to upgrade and maintain than HTML websites.

Is HTML or CMS better for my website?

HTML websites are better for small websites under 6 pages which don't need regular content updates or interactive functions such as galleries, forums etc.

CMS websites are best for larger websites which require regular content changes and/or interactive features.
